The town of Stellenbosch was founded in 1679, making it the second oldest European settlement after Cape Town. Franschhoek, meanwhile, was settled by French Huguenot settlers not long afterwards, sparking the region’s wine industry, which has become deservedly famous in the more than 300 years since.
